Happy Hormone Smoothie

There are so many factors that contribute to hormone imbalance. Take oestrogen dominance for instance. Is it that you make too much testosterone that's quickly converted into oestrogen or is it that your phase 1 liver detoxification is sluggish and can't eliminate it from your body quickly enough? Or perhaps it's phase 2 detoxification that's too slow? Or maybe still, perhaps it's your gut bugs that are causing a problem? For sure, there are a family of bacteria (we call them the estrobolome) that, if in abundance, have the ability to reabsorb detoxified oestrogen back into circulation contributing to oestrogen dominance. And what if it's a concoction of all the above?! Needless to say, hormone balance is thirsty work (and that's just looking at what could go wrong with just one hormone).

Regardless, this smoothie is pretty well rounded and is bursting with ingredients that help keep your hormones happy. At the top of the list? Bee pollen. It's high in chrysin, a flavonoid that's been shown to inhibit aromatase. In plain English, that means it slows down activity of the enzyme that is responsible for converting testosterone into oestrogen. It's a common issue that can lead to oestrogen dominance and low testosterone.

But that's not all. Bee pollen could be good for fertility too. One animal study showed it helped to regulate ovarian function, boosting both estradiol (our most active form of oestrogen) and progesterone. As if that's not impressive enough, it's good for our men too. Another study showed it helped to boost their testosterone. Apparently, the chrysin found in bee pollen stimulates steroidgenesis; an important process that boosts cholesterol activity from which we make our sex hormones.

But here's the biggie. Bee pollen might also support menopausal women too. One study found that, when combined with honey, participants saw a 70% reduction in their menopausal symptoms in comparison to placebo. I know, bee pollen are like magical beads that do wonders for our hormones.

I could honestly keep going. They're high in protein (about 32.8%) important for liver function and optimal detoxification; rich in B vitamins that we rely on for hormone synthesis and elimination, as well as pyhtonutrients like polyphenols and carotenoids that help mop up free radical damage keeping hormone detoxification clean and tidy. Partnered with carrots, banana and chia seeds, this smoothie is high in fibre that maintain balanced gut bugs and hormone clearance. Not to mention the turmeric, ginger and black pepper - a mighty trio of anti-inflammatories that help maintain optimal hormone communication. I wasn't kidding when I said this recipe was well rounded.


Serves 1

  • 100ml mineral water

  • 100ml unsweetened nut milk

  • 1 inch fresh ginger

  • pinch black pepper

  • 1/2 tsp turmeric

  • 1 cardamon pod

  • 1 carrot

  • 1 small banana

  • 1 tbsp chia seeds

  • 1 tsp fresh bee pollen


  1. Whizz all the ingredient except the bee pollen together in a high speed blender.

  2. Pour into a glass and sprinkle bee pollen on top.

  3. Enjoy!
